First off I would just like to say that I started playing call of duty in COD2 and COD 4 really blew up my interest in the franchise and I have played each game since.
I had a very long "rant" going and I decided to scrap it all and save some time, I'll make everything brief here. I feel like most people don't need proof that these maps are bad or for exact examples of the following...
It is very apparent in Ghosts that the maps are... mediocre at best.
Let's assess the problems in Ghosts:
- A large amount of flank routes means more deaths from behind and from the side, thus the "you die too fast in this game" complaint that I am sure most of you have heard way too many times.
- With many flank routes, it makes it easy to get behind enemies, which in turn messes up spawns.
- With it being so easy to get behind enemies, it creates a huge K/D gap among players in your average lobby. I am around 2.4 and I see a lot of other people in the 2.2-2.5 range, then an enormous dropoff to around 1.3, then a huge majority of the players behind below 1.0. The cause for this huge gap (which is MUCH larger than previous titles) is that someone who changes their playstyle to take advantage of the easy flanking and plethora of stealth perks (leads into the huge dead silence debate, plus takedown being very strong for flanking) and picks up many easy kills per life, while other players who have a more simple and traditional playstyle are more used to more straight-forward gunfight based play... Which we all know Ghosts is not a gunfight oriented game. With ghosts I had to change my playstyle drastically, from more of a power position forceful playstyle to something much more quick and stealthy, and its easier than ever to pick off kills without even engaging in a gunfight if you are smart about your positioning. (But people don't like getting shot in the back and giving up an uncontested kill)
It looks like each DLC will have some sort of old map brought back, and it looks like the new maps they are making are not a whole lot different than the ones on the disc. So at least there is something to look forward to.
Ghosts is not as bad of a game as many play it out to be, most of the problems people are having are map based. Play on the new version of scrapyard and I guarantee you won't have AS MANY bad spawns. Somehow they managed to make the map worse with one change, most of the games I play on it are filled with people going underground and coming up right in my teams spawn, and it throws off the normal flow of the game that MW2 was so great for.
I would honestly pay a whole $60 for a new version of ghosts with all COD4 and MW2 maps, I feel like it would be really enjoyable. If they through in an extra DLC besides the already planned ones throwing in old maps (untouched, i dont need them to waste time making things look new when there are other things that need attention) I would buy it in an instant and I would love Ghosts. Unfortunately I don't think that will happen.
What were some of your favorite maps?
Most of the COD4 and MW2 maps played very nicely and were really great and I know most people agree.
The real purpose of this all is to make a point and ask, what is the future from here for the rest of Ghosts and future COD games? BO2 didn't have very good maps either, and MW3 had better maps but they seem to have gone downhill from there. I feel like map design needs to be a bigger focus for future COD games, because me enjoying COD Ghosts is really on a map to map basis right now, the first DLC looks somewhat promising though. Most of my playing time now is just Clan Wars, the somewhat competitive nature is the only thing keeping me playing!
If you all would like me to be more convincing in my argument of why map design issues lead to problems in other aspects of the game, I could make a much longer and in depth post but I thought I wouldn't waste all of your time as this post is long enough as is.
Cheers,
